For a long time, some people have been agitating for a national or sovereign national conference and now it seems that the govt is already thinking about it too. Do we really need a national conference when we already have a sitting national assembly? It would involve money, contracts and selection of people in a manner which may not favour the general public. What good will a National conference do?

Nigerians need the National Conference for the following reasons:

1.Nigerians would have decided how they intend to live together. This is because at present there are lot of suspicion and mistrust among different ethnic nationalities that makes up Nigeria. Equally there is the perceived domination of a region by the other in Nigeria.
2. The outcome of all that would be discoursed might later lead to the formulation of a new and acceptable constitution for Nigeria. Afterall, the 1999 Constitution that we are using now was inherited from the military, therefore not by the people which is suppose to be in the first place. The NASS is even on the verge of modifying the Constitution. It would suffice.
3. The outcome would make the different ethnicity accord respect to each other henceforth.
4. At the emergence of a new Constitution, the National Assembly (NASS) would have less to do again. Therefore, a good reason for NASS to be a par-time job.
5. Possibly the outcome would make Nigeria to now practice the true democracy that we have been longing for over the years. In true democracy, States would not depend solely on the central government for subvention; they will grow independently using resources from their domain.
