Because that is what you get in a military government. Army people normally take power by force and it's because Buhari entered there with force too by overthrowing Shehu Shagari - a civilian president.

It was a bloodless coup since Buhari offered little or no resistance. They both belonged to the Supreme military council and so Buhari practically stepped down for IBB.
